DrinkWise Australia National Youth Forum – Media Release

One of the key insights to come out of DrinkWise Australia’s National Youth Forum was the ‘all or nothing’ drinking culture faced by young adults. Participants said they either drank to get drunk or invented some excuse to avoid drinking altogether. Drinking in moderation was not an option because it put them out of sync with the rest of their social group.

About 100 people from around Australia were involved in the Forum, most were young adults and all were over 18. There were also experts from government and non-government agencies working in this area, researchers and communication specialists. The Forum was part of National Youth Week and was held in Canberra on 1 April 2011.

The plea from the participants was for tools to help them deal with ‘group drink’ culture…

Thank you to all who have registered for the DrinkWise Australia National Youth Forum. It is promising to be an engaging day with a stellar lineup!

Steve Cannane of ABC’s The Drum and Lateline, Oarsome Foursome rower Mike McKay, along with an inspiring team of young adults and professionals will form our panel on the day. They will all be on hand to engage with our audience in session discussion, workshops and breaks.

Hosted by Walkley award winning journalist Steve Cannane, Tipping Point is a national Youth Forum set up to provide Australia’s youth with a platform to have their say on Australia’s drinking culture and how it might be improved.

Young Aussies will evaluate their OWN culture, come to their OWN conclusions and come up with their OWN strategies for change where they think it is needed.

Applications are now open to young adults who wish to contribute to a discussion about Australia’s Youth Drinking Culture.

This event is part of National Youth Week 2011.
